You are interested in a photography session and would like to have a rough idea what kind of investment you are looking at. Maybe you have a set spending limit you would like to avoid exceeding or you are price shopping a bit and comparing different photographers whose work you like (nothing wrong with that!).
You will find that there are two types of photographers.
The first kind fits in the 'shoot and burn' category: You will get a set price for your session that includes a shoot and digital files of your images. You will be sent on your way to use your digital images as you please, mostly with few or no guidelines on design or access to products that will make your images shine. I'm not judging here. There are plenty of people looking for only digital files to share on social media or print on their annual Christmas cards, and a shoot and burn photographer might be exactly what they want.
The second kind will give you access to professionally designed photography products after reviewing your session images with you. They will help you pick out the images that will look the best together in a wall gallery or complement each other nicely on individual album spreads.
This is where I fit in.
These photographers typically charge a set session fee and will then offer different package and/or a la carte product options for you to purchase. With a price inquiry you get a quote for the session fee, but not the products since everyone will be interested in different items which makes it impossible to give you an exact number of how much you are going to invest (some people will be looking into an album while others would like to display their favorite images on the wall and add a set of birth announcements as well..). Of course you can always ask what the typical client spends or what the starting point for package pricing is to get a better idea.
As part of my photography services I offer a free consultation for each client. Before we even talk about the downpayment for your session (which is the session fee) I want to make sure that we are a good fit for each other, get a chance to get to know each other a bit, talk about product options/wishes and pricing, and discuss the different ideas you may have for your session with me.
Your session fee will be due with your signed photography session agreement. Some clients decide to go ahead and book their sessions during their in person consultation, others prefer to think about it and get back to me later in which case I will send an electronic copy of the contract as well as a link for payment to secure your session appointment.
Next, we will meet to take pictures! Of course the photography session is included in the session fee. Depending on the type of session you booked we will spend around 1-2 hours (up to 3 for newborns) having fun taking photos of your family (just the two of you, three, five, ten, it doesn't matter, there is no extra charge for additional people).
After our session I will get busy sorting and processing your photographs and getting them ready for your viewing session (included in your session fee). You will get about 25 professionally retouched images to view during your ordering appointment. This is the perfect amount to design a beautiful album or pick your favorites for a few pieces of framed wall art or gift prints for the family.
