What to wear for your maternity session | Albuquerque maternity and newborn photographer

You are super excited to have your maternity portraits taken but are not sure what to wear. After all, the last time you had professional photos taken was on your wedding day and we all know what kind of planning goes into outfits for that occasion! And you really only have had a few months to figure out how to dress with an ever growing baby belly..

Comfort is key and will show in your photographs.

Well, do not fret, there are a few simple guidelines that will help you look and feel (let's not underestimate the importance of comfort!!) your best for your maternity session.

As for any session, you want to make sure you feel comfortable in what you are wearing. Be yourself, on your best day. Make a hair and make up appointment as well if you like, feeling your best shows in your photographs!

Clothing choices will obviously depend on your style. I like to tell my clients to pick two outfits they really love for everyone in the family and we can finalize outfits for your photo session during your consultation. And don't feel like you have to figure it all out yourself. Please ask if you need any assistance in choosing outfits or figuring out where to shop, I'm always happy to help!

I love the natural look, textured sweater and necklace this momma went for.

Avoid big busy patterns and logos (small/regular patterns are lovely) and stay away from anything neon (those colors can cast funky tones on your skin).

Neutrals with a pop of color are great (think grays, navy, earth tones, pastels, whites). Add textures, layers and subtle but meaningful accessories to complete your look if you like.

Your partner's (and big brother's/sister's if present) outfit should complement yours by containing maybe one or two of the same colors. You absolutely don't have to be all matchy-matchy (in fact, I typically discourage that unless you like to wear matching clothing all the time and that's just kind of your thing.. well, you never know!) but your outfits should complement each other.

Of course we want to make sure that your baby belly will get the attention it deserves.

Form fitting clothing is always great, and can be as simple as your favorite pair of maternity pants with a t-shirt, cozy sweater or blouse, or as fancy as a full length maternity dress.

Formfitting or flowy maternity gowns are always a nice choice.

A sheer gown/light favorite blanket and/or a lacy bra are great if you would like some images of your uncovered belly as well.

This sheer and textured gown is lovely and you can't ever go wrong with a simple natural color palette.

As part of your consultation we will make sure that you feel comfortable with all aspects of your upcoming photography session. That includes talking about outfits and styling to make sure you feel prepared and avoid any last minute panic about how to look your best.
